The Neosystemic Framework

A Therapeutic Approach That Honors Your Whole Story

Healing begins with understanding. Understanding begins with your story.

Every person who comes to therapy brings more than a diagnosis or a problem. They bring relationships that have shaped them, cultures that have influenced them, life experiences that have left their mark, strengths that helped them survive, and hopes for the future.

At Multicultural & Spanish Therapist Group, the Neosystemic Framework is the clinical philosophy that guides the way we understand people, relationships, and change.

It isn't a therapy technique.

It's the lens through which we listen, understand, and walk alongside every client.

Because when people feel deeply understood, meaningful change becomes possible.

Nelliana Acuña, LMFT-S, Founder and Clinical Director of Multicultural & Spanish Therapist Group and creator of the Neosystemic Framework.

Why I Created the Neosystemic Framework

Throughout years of working with multicultural individuals, couples, and families, I noticed something important.

People rarely arrive carrying only anxiety, depression, conflict, or trauma. Yet many people had experienced therapy that helped reduce symptoms without fully helping them make sense of their lives.

They also bring migration stories.
Multiple cultural identities.
Family expectations.
Language.
Experiences of belonging—or not belonging.
Life transitions.
Relationships that continue to shape how they see themselves and the world.

Time and time again, I found myself asking questions that traditional approaches did not always help  me answer.

How do we understand someone whose life has been shaped by more than one culture?
How do relationships, identity, migration, and context influence emotional wellbeing?
How do we understand people without separating them from the lives they have lived?

The Neosystemic Framework was born from those questions.

Not to replace existing therapies, but to offer a broader way of understanding the complexity of human experience and this modern world.

What Is the Neosystemic Framework?

The Neosystemic Framework is a relational and culturally responsive way of understanding people.

Rather than beginning only with symptoms, it invites us to understand the relationships, experiences, identities, cultures, and contexts that give those symptoms meaning.

It helps us understand not only what someone is experiencing, but also why those experiences make sense within the context of their life.

Because people do not experience life one piece at a time. Neither should therapy.

A Different Way of Understanding People

Many therapeutic approaches focus on reducing symptoms or changing behaviors. Those goals matter, but lasting change often begins with understanding something deeper.

We believe people make sense when we understand the relationships, experiences, and cultural contexts that have shaped their lives. Our goal is not simply to reduce distress, but to help people understand themselves with greater clarity, compassion, and hope.

Relational and Culturally Responsive

Being relational means recognizing that our lives are shaped through relationships—with our families, partners, communities, and the experiences that influence how we see ourselves.

Being culturally responsive means recognizing that culture is not separate from therapy; it is part of your story. Rather than expecting people to adapt to therapy, we strive to understand the cultural experiences, identities, and values that shape their lives.

What This Means for You

When you work with one of our therapists, you can expect someone who seeks to understand more than the problem that brought you to therapy. We take time to understand your story, your relationships, your strengths, your values, and the experiences that have shaped you.

Because therapy is not about telling you who you should become. It is about helping you better understand who you already are.

The Principles That Guide Every Conversation

Everything we do is guided by a simple belief:

People make sense when we understand their story.

That belief shapes the principles we bring into every therapeutic conversation.

• We seek to understand before we assume.

• We see the whole person, not just the problem.

• We recognize that relationships shape our lives.

• We honor the role of culture, identity, and context.

• We believe people already possess strengths that can support healing.

• We work collaboratively because meaningful change happens in relationship.

You don't need to understand the theory for it to make a difference.

You'll experience it through the way your therapist listens, asks questions, understands your relationships, explores your cultural experiences, and collaborates with you throughout therapy.

In other words, the Neosystemic Framework isn't something you'll study.

It's something you'll experience.
